Skills Matter Wrap-Up: See You at droidcon London 2020!

17:00

End of #droidconUK 2019 Day 2

Excited to have Christina Lee joining us this year for a droidcon London keynote! 🤖

Describing herself on Twitter as a "relentlessy energetic morning person" interested in "cars, people, and anything that compiles," Christina Lee is a Software Engineer and Android GDE at Pinterest. She works on the Core UI platform team.

What will you be sharing this year? What inspired you to give this talk?

My keynote will be called 'Coding Like An Athlete.' The premise? Many programmers get paid amounts similar to professional athletes, yet pro athletes have entire suites of team doctors fine tuning how they eat, drink, and exert themselves to maximize performance. In contrast, programmers rarely seem to account for how their physical surroundings effect their programmatic output. This keynote will coalesce the most recent medical studies about human concentration and performance and talk about how we can apply them to developer workflows to become more productive and happy at work.

Which other talks from droidcon London are you excited about? And why?

I'm really excited for Lisa's talk on the The Light Way. Lisa is one of my favorite speakers (her talks are always entertaining) but I'm also really interested in the premise of this talk -- what type of app experience can you build if you strip out all the extra dependencies and code to the rails of android? Looking at the growing list of dependencies and features in my own side projects, I'm hoping I'll walk away with some inspiration to focus on the core.

What made you want to be a part of droidcon London this year?

It always comes down to the people. I can't wait to see all of the developers on the other side of the pond that I don't usually get to speak with. I learn so much from listening to people at conferences, and am excited to mingle with the diverse group of attendees that flock to droidcon London.

Do you have any blog posts/podcasts or materials you think people might enjoy reading before coming along to your talk?

My talk will be a pretty far departure from what I normally speak about, so I don't have any existing materials related to it.

If someone was to make a Pinterest board of your life, which five things, people and / or places would they include?

Well right now I feel like I already have my life on Pinterest. My most contributed to boards are Dogs (all puppy photos), Recipes to Try (so many desserts!), Yellow (where I pin only yellow things), Needlecraft Inspo (for my weaving, embroidery, etc projects), and Wines (I have a huge collection).

Catch Christina Lee at droidcon London this October! More info on our Programme Page

Swag lady, Stacy Devino, talks personal branding, the highlights of droidcon London 2018 and having a 'droid in the oven! ✨

Android expert, Stacy Devino has worked on 'droid Apps down to the whole Android OS, developed IoT appliances from the ground up, and had work featured on Wired, Gizmodo and Geek.com (to name a few!). Her current work at Nike covers Augmented Reality, Machine Learning and InfoSec - with a focus on delivering excetional customer mobile experiences.

What will you be sharing this year? What inspired you to give this talk?

I am super excited to be teaching people through "Get Happy, Get Known, Get Paid" which is all about Personal Branding as a Developer and how to capitalize on it. Little Secret, the superstars of the Developer World didn't get there on pure talent alone or "accidentally" (for the most part)! There are concrete steps that you can do to be recognized for the work you are ALREADY doing at every level and stage in your career. Personal branding and fulfilling that promise is worth real money, real happiness, real success in your work, and keeps building on itself.

Quite frankly, I saw that no one was talking about this and it is a collection of actions that I and many others learned through trial and error. In the past, I had been frustrated by feeling "held back" at work as well as not getting paid comparably to people I was leading! To find the right situation, you want people coming to you and not you going to them. When an employer knows you and your capabilities before knocking at your door, it's much more likely to be "Opportunity Knocking". 😉

Side Note : If I had not have taken these actions, I honestly don't believe I would be feeling so comfortable and unworried about work in my choice to have children. It is because of this that I was able to get a job I love that would support my decision and the money to comfortably afford it. Did I mention I will be doing this talk 7.5 months Pregnant!?! 🤰

Which other talks from droidcon London are you excited about? And why?

I think that Ana Baotic's talk really feeds into the precursors or "pre-work?" to my talk. We are all imposters just trying to fake it enough til we make it. The Mystery of what Chet Haase and Romain Guy will put together ??? I really loved "Trash Talk" last year!

Lisa Wray speaking about how the codebase is done and put together at Facebook, through components from Android Jetpack. Its the use, use cases and data behind it is what I am most interested in there!

Finally, some of the Kotlin multiplatform talks like with Sergey Ryabov and Britt Barak. I honestly cannot wait for Kotlin Flow to go mainline!

What made you want to be a part of droidcon London this year?

LAST YEAR! Oh my goodness, it was so amazing last year! I got to meet so many fantastic developers that I normally would have never and make friends (professionally and personally). #BetterThanIO

Do you have any blog posts/podcasts or materials you think people might enjoy reading before coming along to your talk?

I hate to give spoilers away, but I think that these are some great building blocks to start out with.

Recommended Talks (on Video):

Self Care for Developers: Defense Against the Dark Arts - By Nitya Narasimhan

The Art of Intentionality - by Corey Latislaw

Staying Fresh and Avoiding Burnout - by Jen Looper

What would be your dream piece of swag to pick up at a conference?

Scarves, Bandanas (aka mini-capes) and Trucker Hats. I'd love a high quality hat that people could get signed like a yearbook or a Bandana or Scarf that could be appreciated for years to come, well beyond that of "another 'con t-shirt".

Catch Stacy Devino at droidcon London this October! More info on our Programme Page

Skills Matter Wrap-Up: See You at droidcon London 2020!

17:00

End of #droidconUK 2019 Day 2

Sneak Preview
